Do languages cause borders or do borders cause languages? This volume in the Current Issues in Language and Society series attempts to situate the debate on language policies in Southeastern Europe within the larger debate in social sciences and humanities on the issues of borders and the formation of national identities.
Brigitta Busch works as a senior research fellow at the Institute for Applied Linguistics at Vienna University, Austria. She studied Slavistics and Communication at Klagenfurt University. She also worked from 1992–2002 as an expert for the Council of Europe's Confidence Building Measures Programme in South-Eastern Europe. Her main research interests cover sociolinguistics (multilingualism in media and education), discourse analysis and intercultural communication.; Helen Kelly-Holmes is a Research Scholar in the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Limerick, Ireland. Her main research interests include intercultural aspects of market and media discourses.
